The Mont Blanc Esprit de Corps

Hiking Europe’s Tour du Mont Blanc was a completely different slice of European culture for me: coming from a remote farmhouse to a thriving cafe serving a wonderful lunch… flowers and cows (with classic bells) sprinkled naturally… and an esprit de corps where everyone is like family.

4.cow
Our trail passed through three countries — France, Italy and Switzerland — before returning to our starting point in France. This cow is completely Swiss.
2.mountain cafe
One of the joys of TMB is coming upon an old farmhouse on a mountain alp (or pasture) that, these days, is a thriving little restaurant for hungry and thirsty hikers. The prices are reasonable, the service is friendly, the food is great, and the vibe is a joy.

Since almost everyone hikes in the same direction (counter-clockwise), you become friends with fellow hikers. It seemed like half the people on the trail were from America, and I met many satellites.

5.trail talk
It was easy to get through the long journey immersed in deep conversation with the people we met along the way.

I had the pleasure of meeting a fan of my books and TV shows, who was celebrating his 60th birthday by visiting TMB with his son.

And in the interest of hiking light, lunch was pretty simple – just a sandwich from the hotel, maybe a carrot, a piece of fruit and water. But lunch on reaching the summit midday was a marmot feast. (Speaking of marmots, we didn’t see any wildlife except for a few mice buried under hiking boots on the trail.)
